About Us MOTHER STUDIOS in HACKNEY WICK is an independent, non-profit, artist-run organisation. It has 15,000 square feet of warehouse space housing 38 affordable, quality studio spaces for fine artists, designers and makers. I am an artist myself and established the studios in 2001 after a long search for a studio in the Hackney area. The dwindling number of studios due to property redevelopment and rent increases at this time prompted me to set up my own. The studios were self-financed and I negotiated a long-standing lease until 2017. I continue to work there and manage the development of the organisation. Since 2004, space has been set aside as the Mother Project and Exhibition space – a 1,200 square foot space, which is available free to all Mother artists. In October 2007 Elevator Gallery was set up by Snoozie Hexagon and Simon-Reuben White, two artists at Mother Studios. The gallery is committed to exhibiting artists at all stages of their career. The curators are especially interested in transgressive and thought provoking work. Asides the regular exhibitions of international contemporary art the gallery has a regular programme of live art, cinema and musical events.
