Alice Browne

Alice Browne's practice playfully explores a tension between historical notions of depth relating to the flat painting or photographic surface and depth that we relate to visual experience - what if feels like to look at something in a space (and to be looked back at).

The paint is manipulated loosely, treading the ground between material and image. By applying or removing; concealing or revealing, unidentifiable forms develop through the layers of paint. Working quickly on many paintings at a time, the brush shape and consistency of paint is allowed to influence the mark making, appearing facile and momentary whilst also being complicated and unavoidably historical.
