Barton Hargreaves

From an examination of our changing perception of and relationship to time, my work has moved on to the possible, and indeed plausible, failure of the human project and the notion of progress. It seems that by using and being used by new communication technologies such as the mobile phone, the internet and instantaneous digital imaging, we can be in many places at the same time. However, maybe we are, in fact, barely in any place at any time. We exist in an almost constant absence from the here and now. As we ‘boldly leap’ further into an un-chartered technological existence it seems that we are followed by an ever-growing shadow.

Technique
Process is very important in the creation of my work and I use a wide range of printmaking techniques as my palette; from cutting edge digital processes to more traditional techniques such as Lithography and Etching. The work often goes in and out of the digital realm a number of times in its production as well as encountering the artist’s hand and having some performative aspect, either as starting point or in development, thus creating layers of history which are embedded in the final work.
