Ella Lucas Ella Lucas’s work presents the absurdities of communication. Recurring motifs are translated across different media – objects become the subject of paintings; painted images are made into objects. The aim is not to display any rational connections; rather, to make ridiculous such rationalisations. The use of arrows between images and punctuation compress the action into a sequence of movements and perceptions, pointing to implicit dialogues between the two, demanding a reading. The viewer is set the task of either searching for a singular logic that isn’t there, or determining their own conclusions from the comparisons and collisions. The painting is no longer the codified expression of a thought or feeling or of a translation, it functions solely to represent how things themselves speak and are silent, and attempts to present a relationship between the sayable and the visible. New constructs, of uncertain function and identity, are left in the hands of the viewer to comprehend. The required space is the between, which rather than offering any cohesive link or discourse offers nothing, but the potential for everything. Contact: ellalucas@live.com URL: www.ellalucas.com |
